Pitter Patter
Materials: Ash
Pitter-Patter is designed to rethink the way we switch on a light. It explores a playful new way to bring a warm glow to the home, combining a wooden base and a soft fabric lampshade.
What was the first question you asked yourself when you started this project?
Eliana Kertzner: The first question I asked myself when I began this process was, how do I mix hard goods and soft goods? I decided that I was going to explore using fabric and also using wood, which I didn't have as much experience in before.
How did your project change from your original vision during the design process?
EK: My project changed fairly substantially as I experimented with materials, and a lot of times the materials just informed the different shapes that I was going to use so that I could use them most effectively.
What was the most challenging aspect of this project?
EK: What challenged me most about this project was figuring out how all of the components were going to fit together because it was made of components that I didn't necessarily have as much experience in, primarily electronics and wood.
What was your greatest success in this project?
EK: My greatest success in this project was getting the electronics to work exactly the way that I wanted them to with the magnet involved as well, and that was lovely.
How would you want to improve your project in the future?
EK: To improve my project, I would love to continue asking people who have more experience in these specific materials and devices how I could use them in a more effective way, and that would be a really exciting opportunity for me.
