Slate Stool
Materials: Alder & Steel
The Slate Stool is an easy-to-assemble seating solution designed for prolonged comfort and durability. Crafted with solid wood and concealed hardware, it is distinct from the typical flat-pack aesthetic.
What was your guiding principle when designing the Slate Stool?
Eowyn Boosinger: The first question I had at the start of this project was how to design a flat-pack stool that doesn't look like a flat-pack. This led me to focus on minimizing and concealing hardware as well as designing the components to fit together in such a way that it appears as one solid piece.
How did your project change throughout the design process?
EB: At the start of the design process, I wanted to explore ways to do a zero-hardware design, and the pieces had to fit together really tightly in order to do that, which made assembly and disassembly very difficult. This led me to switch to utilizing screw inserts and hardware to make it more user-friendly when assembling.
What challenged you the most about this project?
EB: What challenged me with this project was the subtle curvature of the seat profile. It was very difficult to prototype, so it took a long time to dial in that aspect of the design.
How would you improve your design in the future?
EB: To improve my project I would like to conduct more user testing. I would like to test on a broader range of people of different heights and sizes.
