Home Chair
Materials: Maple
Home Chair is a robust dining chair that initiates a dialogue with its user through a delicate carving hidden beneath the seat and on its back. Through its sturdy build and emotional relationship to its user, Home Chair can ignite a long lasting and intimate relationship with its owner.
What guided you when starting this project?
Léo Ashla Cramer: The first question I asked myself when starting this project was, how could I make a chair that both solely served its utility and didn't draw attention to itself, but also actively fostered an intimate connection between the user and forced the user to really want to sit in that chair specifically.
How did the design change throughout the project?
LAC: Throughout the process of this project, the biggest thing that changed was the detail of carving. I experimented a lot with how that should manifest itself through this project and in the chair. Finally I was able to come to something that both predominantly remained hidden but also drew a very visceral reaction when interacted with.
What was the biggest difficulty you faced during this project?
LAC: The biggest difficulty of this design was trying to hide the carving detail within the design while also highlighting the frame and the joinery of this chair as an illustration of its form and historical influences.
How would you continue to develop this project?
LAC: If I was to further improve this project, I would love to continue exploring how and why the carving exists on the frame.
